5 reasons to live in Nieuwegein

In the middle of the Netherlands, Nieuwegein has all important amenities you will need. But why would you specifically choose to live here?

#1 New city vibes

Nieuwegein is a new city. This year, in 2021, the city only exists 50 years and that is quite exceptional in the Netherlands. The reason Nieuwegein is so new is because it is a growth core. Nieuwegein is developed to cope with Utrecht’s expanding population in the 60s and 70s.

The city is a merger of the former municipalities Juphaas and Vreeswijk. In this area there used to be a village called ‘Geyne’. That’s where the name Nieuwegein comes from. Are you familiar with Nieuwegein? Then you probably know Huis Oudegein, a castle and estate in Oudegein, a district of Nieuwegein. The castle is the only thing that’s left from the Geyne era. In 2015, the center of Nieuwegein was even completely renovated, which means that the city now has an even more modern and extensive center.

In and around these large cities, the possibility of finding a job is greater. Especially if you are looking for a job where, for example, English is spoken, you will have the best chances in and around the Randstad. Nieuwegein is the perfect home if you work in or around Utrecht.

#4 Lots of green and water

Nieuwegein is located south of the city of Utrecht and is one of the municipalities with the most green areas in the city. Everywhere in Nieuwegein a lot of attention is paid to green: parks, playgrounds, ponds and lawns make the districts and neighborhoods particularly pleasant to live in.

Nieuwegein is situated between the IJsselbos and Park Oudegein. Park Oudegein is the largest park in Nieuwegein and functions as the main city park. There is a central large pond with several smaller ponds around it, a petting zoo, and an ice rink. There are many polders in the area and you can enjoy views of the river Lek. The rivers the Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal, the Lekkanaal and the Merwedekanaal even run straight through Nieuwegein.

You can rent sloops, try some supping, wakeboard, sail, and, water ski. Of course, the hospitality industry and residential recreation is not lacking either.

#5 Central location

The biggest advantage of Nieuwegein is living in a quiet and nature-rich community, while also being able to fully enjoy the nearby city of Utrecht. Utrecht is only 7 kilometers from Nieuwegein.

Apart from the fact that Nieuwegein is located in the middle of central Netherlands, the city is known for its accessible location. The city is enclosed by three highways (A2, A12, and A27) which you can access within minutes. There is a railroad station, a bus, a foot and bike ferry across the Lek, and an express streetcar. The only thing there is not is a train station.
