What is housing allowance?

If you rent a home in the Netherlands, there’s a good chance that you may be entitled to receive housing allowance (Huurtoeslag). This is applicable to Dutch and international tenants, including expatriate workers and students. The housing allowance make your rent even more affordable, because you will receive a significant cost reduction from the Dutch government!

For individuals with a relatively low income, most rents are too high in relation to what they earn. On request, the Tax Services of the Dutch government provides these individuals with a housing allowance in order to make these homes more affordable. Particularly students fall into a lower income group, which is why students are definitely eligible to receive housing allowance.

It is important to note that there are a number of requirements that need to be met in order to receive the housing allowance. These requirements depend on age, income, savings and your basic rent price. The Tax Service Office is very strict when it comes to distributing the housing allowance, and if you are found to be receiving the wrong type of allowance, you will be required to pay all assistance back to the Tax Services.
